Ingredients

bottles of ingredients with lemons for blue lagoon.

This drink only requires three basic ingredients.  Let's talk a little about each one.

  • Blue Curaçao Syrup: This is not the alcoholic blue Curaçao liqueur; this is a non-alcoholic syrup.
  • Lemon Juice: Use freshly squeezed juice for the best flavor.
  • Lemon-Lime Soda: Sprite or 7-Up would work very well here. Make sure it's chilled.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

  • Slushie: Make the drink completely in advance and pour it into a glass container with a lid. Freeze for 4-6 hours, stirring halfway through. Break up any clumps before serving.

Recipe FAQs

What does blue Curaçao syrup taste like?

The syrup smells and tastes like a clementine orange. It's very sweet, but has a mild orange flavor that complements other ingredients.

How do you pronounce Curaçao?

This is a challenging word to say, as it's definitely not phonetic!  It should be pronounced as cure-ah-SEW.  Listen to the pronunciation if you feel stumped.

Where does the blue color come from?

Naturally, Curaçao liqueur is colorless, so the blue is all from dye. The syrup's color is also from dye.

Do I need ice for this drink?

If the other ingredients are chilled, there's no need for ice. If you'd like ice anyway, that's fine!

What glassware should I use?

A highball glass (affiliate) is the traditional choice for a blue lagoon, however, many people like to use hurricane glasses or martini glasses.

Serving Blue Lagoon Mocktail

Make Ahead: You can rim the glasses and squeeze the lemon juice in advance, but wait to mix up the drink until right before serving.  You don't want the Sprite to lose its carbonation.

Enjoy with easy appetizers like vegan black bean hummus, Hawaiian meatballs, Caprese bruschetta, and Chipotle queso blanco for a wonderful snack or for serving at a party!

Expert Tips

  • Chill all the ingredients before making the drink. This reduces the need for ice.
  • If you'd like ice, use full cubes of ice.
  • Change up the garnish by using an orange slice or sprig of mint.
  • Want to make this into a slushie? Freeze the drink in a freezer-friendly container for 4-6 hours, stirring halfway through.  Break up any clumps with a fork and enjoy immediately.

    Hi question
Will the Blue curacao syrup turn teeth or tongue blue?

Is the drink color close to a navy blue ?

The drink isn't a navy blue; it's a lighter and brighter hue than that. Your tongue might be blue after drinking it! 🙂

How would you adjust the recipe for a 12oz cup? (Specifically how much syrup and lemon juice would you add?)
    Thanks!

We like the 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in the drink, as it cuts through the sweetness from the blue Curaçao syrup and Sprite. Feel free to decrease it if you like.

How about with seltzer or club soda instead of sprite or 7up?? Then perhaps not as sweet? Or if that not sweet enough how about half 7up and half seltzer or club?

Personally, I like it made with the Sprite/7 Up, but if you want to reduce the sugar, you could do half and half or all seltzer/club. It will definitely taste different made with less or no Sprite, though. Let me know how it goes!

Hi not made this yet. A little concerned that you are saying its non-alcoholic but Blue Curacao has alcohol in it

The recipe calls for blue curacao syrup, which is non-alcoholic. Torani and other companies make this; it's easy to find online.

At 66g sugar per serving, maybe Diet Sprite would be a healthier alternative?

Feel free to substitute with diet soda if you prefer. I personally don't drink diet soda, so I wouldn't recommend it to my readers.

Hi, I'm about to make this cocktail, but I thought blue curacao has alcohol in it? OR is there some non-alcoholic ones?

Blue curacao syrup doesn't contain alcohol, unlike the blue curacao liqueur. We found this syrup at Walmart or online; there's a link to the Torani syrup in the recipe card.

The blue is vibrant, and the drink is fizzy. The lemon makes this sweet drink tangy. The drink was cool and had a nice flavor to it.

This drink is a striking blue color, but tastes like oranges and lemons. The sugared rim and contrasting lemon slice add a tropical feel. I also like this blue lagoon in a slushie version. It's cold and lemony, and I enjoy its refreshing taste.
