If you're like me, you probably throw away the peelings when you make apple pie. But, with this simple recipe, now you'll be able to enjoy the deliciousness of apple peel chips! It literally only takes a few ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep. Let's dig in!
Ingredients
Fortunately, you don't need many ingredients to make these delicious apple peel chips! Let's talk about what you need.
- Apple Peels: Make sure the skins of the apples have been thoroughly washed before being peeled. Any type of apple peel will work well in this recipe.
- Butter: This adds flavor and prevents the apple peels from sticking.
- Sugar: This adds gentle sweetness to the apple peels. Feel free to swap for a different sweetener if you prefer.
- Spices: I use a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin pie spice for a balanced flavor, but you can tweak these to your taste.

Recipe FAQs
They are strips of peels baked until brown and crispy. In my recipe, the peels are tossed in a little bit of melted butter and cinnamon sugar. They're a healthy, crunchy snack that's quick to prep and fun to eat.
Yes, they are actually one of the most nutritious parts of an apple, since the skin contains most of the fiber and vitamins.
There are lots of ways to use them! Add them to make tea, smoothies, salads, or in infused water.
Plain ones without cinnamon, sugar, or other spices are safe for healthy dogs to eat in small quantities. It's not good for dogs to consume lots of excess sugar, so make sure the chips are plain. As always, consult your veterinarian if you have any questions about feeding these to your dog.
They are done when they have turned a rich, dark brown and are crispy. It takes about 2 ½ hours at 250°F for thin peels to be baked. Thicker ones will take longer, but don't turn up the oven temperature; it increases the chance of burning.
Let them cool completely, then seal them tightly inside of a zip-top bag, glass jar, or airtight container. Store in a cool, dry, and dark place for up to 6 months. Don't freeze or refrigerate them.
Giving as Gifts: If you want to give away some of these to family or friends, you can package them in a pretty glass jar with a lid. Tie a gift tag around it with a piece of twine, ribbon, or yarn. See the photo below for an idea.

Expert Tips
- Use thick peels for the best taste. Super thin ones will bake faster and burn easier.
- Leave some of the apple flesh on the peels. This helps them taste better.
- Bake them on parchment paper to catch any messes and keep the cookie sheet clean.
- Bake them low and slow for the best results. A high oven temp will burn them quickly.
- Reserve the extra cinnamon sugar to sprinkle on later.

Thank you Emma They! They taste great, and I'll do better next time.

You're very welcome, Brian! Enjoy!

Emma,
If my apple skins curled up, were they too thin. Or should I have placed a mat over them?
Sincerely, Brian
Emma
The peels probably curled because there wasn't much apple flesh left of them. There's no need to place a mat on them unless you're looking for perfectly flat peels. The peel chips will taste lovely regardless of whether they have curled.
