Ingredients

glass bowls of ingredients for agua de guayaba

This guayaba drink is made from four simple ingredients: fresh guavas, sugar, lime juice, and water.

  • Guavas: Feel free to use yellow or pink guavas as long as they're ripe.
  • Lime Juice: Omit the lime juice if you don't want it, or substitute with lemon juice. Make sure it's freshly squeezed for the best flavor.
  • Sugar: This sweetens the guayaba drink and enhances the flavors of the guavas and lime juice.
  • Water: This dilutes this fresh guayaba drink to stretch it.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Want to change up the flavor of this agua fresca?  There's lots of ways to do that.

  • Sweetener: instead of granulated sugar, try turbinado sugar.
  • Fruit: puree some pineapple, watermelon, fresh ginger, or mango with the guavas.
  • Citrus: add a little lemon, orange, or grapefruit juice instead of lime.
  • Seasoning: add a pinch of canela (Mexican cinnamon) for something different.

How to Make

Gather the ingredients.  You'll need water, sugar, and one pound of fresh guavas.  Grab some fresh limes if you'd like to add some lime juice.

Recipe FAQs

What are guavas?

Guavas are small, round tropical fruits that have a sweet smell and hard seeds.  Americans will notice that they taste similar to Bartlett pears, but are not as sweet.  These fruits are grown in many countries throughout the world, and are usually enjoyed in drinks, sauces, jellies, or raw.

What is agua de guayaba?

This Mexican drink is a variation of agua fresca, which is basically fruit-infused water that's been lightly sweetened.  The guava version of this drink is made from fresh, pureed guavas, lime juice, sugar, and water.

What are the benefits of guava?

This fruit contains high amounts of vitamin C and fiber, and is low in calories per serving.  Health benefits may include healthier heart, skin, and digestive system.

Is agua de guayaba good for you?

Yes, this drink is healthy if enjoyed in moderation.  Many people drink agua de guayaba to ward off colds because of its extremely high vitamin C content.  Each 10-ounce serving contains 150 calories, 4.1g of fiber, and 194% DV of vitamin C.  For the full nutrition facts, scroll to the bottom of the recipe card.

Leftovers: I recommend drinking it within a couple of days of making it, but it should be fine in the fridge for up to 1 week.  Be sure to keep it sealed tightly inside of a mason jar or pitcher, and discard it if it goes bad.

Expert Tips

  • Be sure to use ripe, fresh guavas for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar and lime juice to taste.  Some guavas are more tart than others.
  • Store leftover agua de guayaba in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Since I wasn't a huge fan of guava paste, I wasn't sure if I would like this drink, but I was pleasantly surprised! The sweet and sour flavors are so tropical and great tasting. YUM--this is so good!!
