Ingredients

For the Smoked Butterscotch Sauce

For One Latte

  • cup milk or heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons smoked butterscotch sauce
  • ½ cup strong coffee or ¼ cup espresso
  • 1 teaspoon molasses
  • sprinkle of demerara sugar for garnish

Instructions

Making the Sauce

  • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, then whisk in the brown sugar until smooth.  Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn down the heat to medium and whisk in the cream.  Cook for 5-7 minutes, whisking occasionally to prevent the sauce from burning.
  • Immediately pour the sauce into a large mason jar or bowl.  Once it has cooled some, mix in a few drops of liquid smoke.  Taste and add more until a slightly smoky flavor is reached.

Making the Latte

  • Heat the cream in the microwave or in a saucepan until it's steaming.
  • Put 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of the butterscotch sauce into a mug.  Add the coffee, 2 tablespoons of warm cream, and molasses, then stir until smooth.
  • Froth the remaining cream until it's doubled in volume using a milk frother or shaking it vigorously in a jar, then pour it on top of the latte and sprinkle a little demerara sugar on top.
  • Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Make your own sauce.  Store-bought won't taste half as good as homemade.
  • Use dark brown sugar in the butterscotch sauce; otherwise, it won't have the same flavor.
  • Add the liquid smoke to taste.  You need enough to add a smoky hint, but not too much.
  • Don't have an espresso machine? Use moka pot coffee instead.
  • In a hurry?  Make the latte ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for later.  It will reheat nicely in the microwave, or taste good over ice.
