Learn how to make this delicious fall coffee drink at home. Add a secret ingredient to the buttery butterscotch sauce to give a sophisticated flavor to this copycat Starbucks smoked butterscotch latte. It’s an easy and tasty way to start your morning!
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, then whisk in the brown sugar until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn down the heat to medium and whisk in the cream. Cook for 5-7 minutes, whisking occasionally to prevent the sauce from burning.
Immediately pour the sauce into a large mason jar or bowl. Once it has cooled some, mix in a few drops of liquid smoke. Taste and add more until a slightly smoky flavor is reached.
Making the Latte
Heat the cream in the microwave or in a saucepan until it's steaming.
Put 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of the butterscotch sauce into a mug. Add the coffee, 2 tablespoons of warm cream, and molasses, then stir until smooth.
Froth the remaining cream until it's doubled in volume using a milk frother or shaking it vigorously in a jar, then pour it on top of the latte and sprinkle a little demerara sugar on top.
Enjoy immediately.
Notes
Make your own sauce. Store-bought won't taste half as good as homemade.
Use dark brown sugar in the butterscotch sauce; otherwise, it won't have the same flavor.
Add the liquid smoke to taste. You need enough to add a smoky hint, but not too much.
Don't have an espresso machine? Use moka pot coffee instead.
In a hurry? Make the latte ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for later. It will reheat nicely in the microwave, or taste good over ice.
