Ingredients

  • ¾ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ¾ cup simple syrup
  • teaspoon kosher salt
  • 12- ounce can frozen limeade
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1 cup sparkling water
  • 2-3 jalapeño peppers sliced

Instructions

  • Dissolve ½ cup granulated sugar (100g) with ½ cup of water (120 ml) in a saucepan over medium heat.  Chill in the freezer or fridge until needed.
  • Slice 7-8 limes in half, then microwave them on a plate for 30-45 seconds.  Squeeze the juice from them with a wooden citrus reamer.
  • Stir together ¾ cup of simple syrup with the freshly squeezed lime juice, orange juice, and the kosher salt.  This part can be made ahead and refrigerated until later.
  • Pour the juice mixture into a blender and add the frozen limeade and crushed ice.  Blend on high speed until the ice is chopped up and the mixture is well mixed.
  • Stir in the sparkling water and jalapeño slices, then pour the drink into a freezer-safe container and freeze for 1 ½ to 2 hours.  Stir the mixture every 30 minutes to help it freeze evenly.  This gives the drink a slushy texture, and also makes it spicier.
  • Dip the rims of the margarita glasses in the leftover simple syrup, then twirl them in margarita salt.
  • Once the drink has a slushy consistency, remove it from the freezer and spoon into the prepared glasses.  Garnish with the frozen jalapeño slices and a lime wheel on the rim.  Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Be sure to squeeze your own limes.  Bottled juice will not taste very good in this drink.
  • Feel free to remove the seeds and membranes from the peppers to reduce the spiciness.
  • Want this drink extra spicy?  Let the jalapeños sit in the drink for a few hours, and add extra slices.
  • Short on time?  Skip the freezing time and just blend in extra crushed ice.
  • Leftover marg can be frozen for up to 3 months and defrosted when desired.
