(Norwegian Christmas Bread)

What You Need

Here's what you need to make this delicious Norwegian Christmas bread from scratch.

Make the Dough

1. Pour the flour into a bowl and mix in the salt and yeast. 2. Add the sugar, cardamom, and butter and mix.

Mix in the Liquid

3. Crush the mixture to form a dry dough. 4. Add the warm milk until it has a slightly sticky mixture.

Knead & Prove

5. Knead the dough until it's smooth, about 10-15 minutes. 6. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled, about 1 1/2 hrs.

Add the Fruit

7. Punch down the dough and knead in the fruit. 8. Shape into a loaf and pick off any dried fruit from the outside.

Prove & Bake

9. Cover the loaf and let it prove until it's springy to the touch, about 30 min. 10. Bake at 375°F for 40-45 min.

Enjoy!

Let the julekake cool completely, then slice and serve with butter, coffee, and brunost (Norwegian goat cheese).
