Saute the onion, carrot, and celery for 5 minutes, then add the garlic and cook for another minute.
Add the dried spices to the sauteed veggies and stir constantly for 30 seconds to bloom them.
Add the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour in 1 cup of broth and scrape off the browned food on the bottom.
Add the rinsed black beans and the remaining vegetable broth and stir. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Pour half of the soup into a powerful blender and blend until pureed. This will thicken the soup and give it a creamier texture.
Stir in the pureed soup, then remove it from the heat and add the lemon juice for extra flavor.
