Does honey help a sore throat feel better?

Yes, honey can help reduce the discomfort of a sore throat.  It coats the throat and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties that can help your throat feel better.

Apple Cider Vinegar or Lemon Juice?

Apple cider vinegar has some antibacterial properties that can help your throat feel better.  Lemon juice is also acidic, like vinegar, and contains vitamin C.  Both of these liquids are effective in reducing the discomfort of a sore throat when mixed with warm water.

What drinks help a sore throat?

Warm, decaffeinated drinks, such as herbal teas, can be effective for sore throats.  These drinks, made with honey and ACV or lemon juice (and ground turmeric if you want), are warm, caffeine-free, and healthy throat-soothing drinks for when you’re under the weather.

How to Make a Soothing Honey Drink

Gather your ingredients: 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon of ACV or lemon juice, 1 cup of water, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric (optional).

Pro Tips

  • Measure the honey and vinegar/lemon juice into the cup before adding the hot water.
  • Use organic, raw ACV and raw local honey if possible.
  • Drink the mixture while it’s warm to soothe your throat.
  • Make the drink ahead of time and keep in a glass bottle to take on the go.  Warm it up in the microwave when you want to drink it.
  • If your sore throat is more severe, add 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the drink.  It will be uncomfortable to drink, so you’ll probably only want a half a dose, but is effective in reducing the pain if this is consumed during the first hour of sore throat symptoms occurring.  Children under age 16 will probably not want to drink this with the cayenne pepper.
  • Make a ginger variation.  Boil the water and add a few slices of peeled fresh ginger root to the drink along with the other ingredients.  Let it steep for 10-15 minutes, then drink.

Cheer up with one of these yummy drinks.
